Gruesome – Dimensions Of Horror (2016)

IMG_3854

Oh yes indeedy! This is some classic old school death metal in the vein of Scream Bloody Gore. I’m just finishing my second listen, and I’m very satisfied!

Get this before it’s sold out. As for Gruesome – I suspect they’ll never sell out!

Heh, seems like I inadvertently almost quoted my review of their LP Savage Land here…

Godflesh – Decline & Fall

Oh how eagerly I awaited this… And how satisfying it was to hear it. No need to elaborate on my affinity for Godflesh, you can just read my old post about their latest lp A World Lit Only By Fire here.

Myrkur – Myrkur

Myrkur - Myrkur Vær hilset. Ever since I saw Relapse Records promoting this ep, I’ve been intrigued. I’ve also worried that it would be crap. I got the record in the mail today, and I’m happy to say that it is in fact quite good. It even has the potential to grow on me I suspect. I really like the spheric vocals, and the drums (that some people dislike) sounds fine and groovy to me. The songs are good, and the musicianship fine for this old grinder. I might give this ep an extra review later on, when I have had the chance to delve into its depths. The kvtl/vn-kvlt-ness of this record is of no significance to me. I think this is a good black metal record, and I look forward to hearing more from her in the future.

Sweet Tooth – Soft White Underbelly

Here we have one of Justin Broadrick’s more obscure releases. Released in 1990 and sounding a lot like Head Of David’s Dustbowl with a punkier edge. It might be a paranthesis in JK’s massive output, but I like it anyway. It has a more organic feel than Godflesh, but with the same industrial heaviness and deep sense of desolation. It reminds me of Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle’s novel The Mote In God’s Eye, especially the sentence: “The industrial ugliness of the endless cityscape”.

Dave Cochran who plays bass and sings was the founder(?) of Head Of David, and Scott Kiehl the drummer was in Slab.
